OWINGS MILLS, Md. —

There's new life at the site of the old Owings Mills Mall. Costco opened its doors Thursday to a packed crowd ready to shop, and Baltimore County officials said it is only the beginning.

"The excitement -- people were lined up. It's jobs, jobs, jobs," Baltimore County Executive Don Mohler said.

After three years of waiting, shopping is back at the site of the old mall with the opening of the new Costco store.

"We've been waiting for a while with something for the property to develop," said Leslie Randall.

"I'm excited that it's here. And I heard they were going to put high-end stores around here. And I'm happy about the gas station also," Baltimore County resident Sandra Wilson said.

Costco is the first to open at what's now being called Mill Station. The Owings Mills store has created just under 300 jobs.

"It's about 270 -- a good boost for the economy, get a lot of stores in the area where the mall went down and hopefully bring it back to life," said David Martin, the merchandise manager at Costco.

"The key thing is, when you put it together with everything that's happening in Owings Mills, you have Metro Station. You have Foundry Row, talking over 1,000 jobs. This alone is over $100 million investment," Mohler said.

Mill Station will include more than 620,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. Construction is already underway on Lowes, with more than two dozen planned businesses on the way.

"Quite a few other stores as well -- HomeGoods, a Burlington. There's going to be restaurants, just finished redoing the movie theatre -- $8 million for the AMC," Councilman Julian Jones said.

Rain has caused some construction delays. There is no word when the other stores will open but weather permitting, Lowes should open in January.
